For solar installed in 2026, the federal Residential Clean Energy Credit (25D) is not available: the IRS says it does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Systems installed in 2025 may still be claimed on a 2025 return. Weigh a 2026 solar project on its own energy savings and talk to a tax professional.
Is the Federal Solar Tax Credit Available in 2026?
No. The IRS Residential Clean Energy Credit page says the credit equaled 30% of the cost of qualified clean energy property installed from 2022 through December 31, 2025, and is not available for any property placed in service after December 31, 2025. If your system was placed in service in 2025, you may still be able to claim it on your 2025 return using Form 5695. The related Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) for windows, doors and insulation ended on the same date.
What This Means for a Brevard County Solar Project
Without the federal credit, a 2026 solar project has to make sense on its own energy savings, your utility's current net metering rules and your roof's remaining life. Ask installers for a payback estimate that does not assume any federal credit, confirm the roof will not need replacement during the system's life, and get the utility interconnection terms in writing. For solar system design and pricing, get advice from a licensed solar contractor.

If your project includes roof or opening upgrades, two programs still apply. The My Safe Florida Home program offers a free wind mitigation inspection and, when funded, grants of up to $10,000 for eligible homes toward roof, window and door upgrades (see the eligibility rules). Florida law also requires insurers to offer wind mitigation discounts for qualifying upgrades (section 627.0629, Florida Statutes).

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a federal solar tax credit in 2026?
No. The IRS says the Residential Clean Energy Credit (25D) is not available for any property placed in service after December 31, 2025. It equaled 30% of the cost of qualified clean energy property installed from 2022 through 2025. Systems placed in service in 2025 may still be claimed on a 2025 return with Form 5695.
Is solar still worth it in Florida without the tax credit?
It depends on your electricity use, roof condition, the installed price and current utility net metering terms. Without the federal credit, ask installers for a payback estimate that assumes no credit, confirm your roof will last as long as the panels, and compare at least two written proposals before deciding.
Does My Safe Florida Home pay for solar panels?
No. My Safe Florida Home grants cover hurricane mitigation upgrades recommended in the program inspection, such as roof improvements, impact windows and exterior doors including garage doors. Solar panels are not a listed improvement. A roof upgrade done for mitigation may still be eligible if your home meets the program rules.
